The Light in the Piazza

Renée Fleming is one of the most highly acclaimed singers of our time, performing on the stages of the world’s great opera houses and concert halls. Honored with five Grammy awards and the U.S. National Medal of Arts, she has sung for momentous occasions from the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony to the Diamond Jubilee Concert for Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace. In 2014 she brought her voice to a vast new audience when she became the first classical artist ever to sing the National Anthem at the Super Bowl. In 2023, she was appointed Goodwill Ambassador for Arts and Health by the World Health Organization. She was also named as one of the 2023 recipients of the Kennedy Center Honors.

Renée’s 2022/23 concert calendar included appearances in London, Vienna, Milan, Los Angeles and at Carnegie Hall. In November, she starred in the world premiere staging of The Hours, a new opera based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and award-winning film, at the Metropolitan Opera. In March, she portrayed Pat Nixon in a new production of Nixon in China at the Opéra de Paris. Renée stars in an upcoming series of IMAX films, Renée Fleming’s Cities That Sing, highlighting the music of great cultural capitals, with performances and visits to notable locations.

Renée has recorded everything from complete operas and song recitals to indie rock and jazz. In January, Decca released a special double-length album of live recordings from Renée’s iconic performances at the Metropolitan Opera, Renée Fleming: Greatest Moments at the Met. In February, Renée received the Grammy Award for Best Classical Vocal Solo for her album Voice of Nature: The Anthropocene, with Yannick Nézet-Seguin as pianist. A collection of classical songs and specially commissioned world premieres, the album focuses on nature as both inspiration and victim of human activity. Known for bringing new audiences to classical music and opera, Renée has sung not only with Luciano Pavarotti and Andrea Bocelli, but also with Elton John, Paul Simon, Sting, Josh Groban, and Joan Baez. Her voice is featured on the soundtracks of Best Picture Oscar winners The Shape of Water and The Lord of the Rings.

In recent years, Renée has become a leading advocate for research at the intersection of arts, health, and neuroscience. As Artistic Advisor to the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, she launched the first ongoing collaboration between America’s national cultural center and the National Institutes of Health. She has presented her program Music and the Mind in more than 50 cities around the world, and launched Music and Mind LIVE, a weekly web show that amassed nearly 700,000 views, from 70 countries. She is a founding advisor for major initiatives in this field, including the Sound Health Network at the University of California San Francisco and the NeuroArts Blueprint at Johns Hopkins University.

In addition to being Advisor for Special Projects at LA Opera, Renée leads SongStudio at Carnegie Hall and is Co-Director of the Aspen Opera Center and VocalARTS at the Aspen Music Festival. Renée’s other awards include the 2023 Crystal Award from the World Economic Forum, the Fulbright Lifetime Achievement Medal, Germany’s Cross of the Order of Merit, and France’s Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur.

Dove Cameron starred as Cher in the Off-Broadway production of Amy Heckerling’s Clueless: The Musical and in Netflix’s Dumplin’ with Jennifer Aniston. She lent her voice to Sony’s 2019 animated feature Angry Birds 2 and appeared in Disney’s 2019 live-action film Descendants 3, which follows the teenage children of classic Disney villains. Dove originated the role of Mal, Maleficent’s daughter, in 2015’s Descendants. The 2017 sequel Descendants 2 drew the biggest cable number since the original and was the most-watched telecast among kid cable TV networks in total viewers (8.6 million). Dove voices Spider-Gwen in the animated film Marvel Rising: Secret Warriors, which premiered simultaneously on Disney Channel and Disney XD. She is set to return in the forthcoming Marvel Rising: Chasing Ghosts.

Dove is perhaps best known for playing the dual role as both title characters in Disney’s Liv and Maddie for four seasons. Her performance garnered a 2018 Daytime Emmy in the category of Outstanding Performer in a Children’s, Preschool Children’s or Educational and Informational Program. She has appeared in Marvel’s Agents of Shield on ABC. She also appeared on NBC’s Hairspray Live!, as Amber von Tussle, and in the film Barely Lethal with Hailee Steinfeld, Jessica Alba and Samuel L. Jackson.

Dubbed “the last leading man” by The New York Times, two-time Tony Award-winner Brian Stokes Mitchell continues to enjoy a 40-year career that spans Broadway, television, film and concert appearances. He received Tony, Drama Desk, and Outer Critics Circle awards for his star turn in Kiss Me, Kate. Stokes also earned Tony nominations for his performances in Man of La Mancha, August Wilson’s King Hedley II, and Ragtime, and he was recently inducted into the Theatre Hall of Fame.

Other notable Broadway shows include Kiss of the Spider Woman, Jelly’s Last Jam, and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. In 2016, Stokes made a long-awaited return to Broadway in Shuffle Along and received his most recent Tony Award for his work as Chairman of the Board of the Actor’s Fund.

Distinguished soprano Marie McLaughlin has enjoyed more than three decades of performance at the highest international level. Over that time, she has collaborated with some of the world’s greatest conductors including such legends as the late Leonard Bernstein and Giuseppe Sinopoli, as well as Daniel Barenboim, Bernard Haitink and Sir Antonio Pappano. A wide repertoire of core roles took her around the world at an early age including to the Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Opéra National de Paris, and the Salzburg and Glyndebourne Festivals. Her substantial discography includes many of those roles including Zerlina in Don Giovanni with Sir Neville Marriner for Philips, Despina in Così fan tutte with James Levine for Deutsche Grammophon as well as Micaëla in Carmen and Violetta in La Traviata under Bernard Haitink.

For the 2018/19 season, Marie McLaughlin joins Garsington Opera as Ludmila in Paul Curran’s production of The Bartered Bride, makes her first appearance as Mother Goose in The Rake’s Progress with the London Philharmonic Orchestra under Vladimir Jurowski, and creates the role of Annie Chapman in Iain Bell’s new commission Jack the Ripper: The Women of Whitechapel for English National Opera. He has lit over 70 West End and over 25 Broadway productions. He was the recipient of the 1992, 1995, 2000, 2002, 2010 and 2016 Olivier Awards for Lighting Design. In 2006 won a Tony Award for The History Boys on Broadway and in 2013 won the WhatOnStage lighting design award for Sweeney Todd. He won a Welsh BAFTA in 2000 for his work on the televised opening of the Millennium Centre in Cardiff. In London’s West End, his most recent credits include Sunset Boulevard, Carousel, Chess and Man of La Mancha (all at the London Coliseum). He is a regular assistant director for English National Opera and has worked for the Royal Opera House, Glyndebourne Festival Opera, Welsh National Opera and Nevill Holt Opera. Internationally, he has worked on productions for both the Dutch and Polish National Opera companies, the Royal Danish Opera, Berlin’s Komische Oper and Oper Frankfurt. He has directed numerous productions at the Edinburgh Festival and on the London Fringe, including The Fantasticks, Assassins and a new musical adaptation of Wuthering Heights.
