A Fall Reimagined

Our fall season might not be the one you (or we) imagined it’d be, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be full of the same operatic magic you’ve come to expect at LA Opera. Try something new with us as we discover the possibilities of what virtual opera can be. 

Digital Shorts 

This new and inventive program invites some of the most in-demand composers to create original work alongside talented visual artists, filmmakers, and performers. The lineup is full of some familiar faces and a few fresh ones too. We’re excited for all of the imaginative projects that are bound to come out of this program, but we wanted to highlight a few.  

Du Yun with Animation Producer and Curator Ron Diamond

Du Yun never fails to amaze audiences, so her digital short will be no different. She’s working on three movements from her one-act opera Zolle.

You’ll likely remember some of this dream team from the Pulitzer Prize-winning opera prism, which we premiered at REDCAT through our Off Grand programming. This time, they’ve made their way back to LAO to wow us again with a music video for “The Sodbuster’s Aria” from Proving Up. 

Tamar-kali will be making her (virtual) company debut with this new commission.

She’ll be teaming up with mezzo Raehann Bryce-Davis on a project titled The Opera Murder Club: Jane Doe.  

The Anonymous Lover 

This company premiere of the 1780 opera by French composer Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges will be full of firsts. To start, this will be the first time we stream a full production to live audiences as we continuously look for new ways to bring you distinctive works. We’re especially looking forward to this new operatic experience we can create with the help of the Colburn School. But that's not all the newness in store. 

Director Bruce Lemon, Jr., will be making his company premiere...

... alongside our Richard Seaver Music Director, Maestro James Conlon of course.
